Herman Miller's Quilty Fabric Draws Performance and Sustainability from Nature
May 30, 2008   [E-mail Page]  [Print Page]

Herman Miller has utilized the principles of biomimicry in its newly developed textile for seating and systems products. Named Quilty, the Eco Intelligent Polyester fabric is treated with GreenShield--an ecological, nanotechnology-based stain and water repellent from G3 Technology Innovations.

Herman Miller will display Quilty in its third floor showroom during the NeoCon World's Trade Fair at Chicago's Merchandise Mart, June 9-11, 2008.

Designed to be a safe, environmentally friendly alternative to harmful fluorochemicals typically found in stain-resistant materials and non-stick cookware, GreenShield's technology works at the molecular level to create a pocket of air as a barrier between the fabric and fluids--a process that occurs naturally with the lotus leaf.

"Herman Miller is the first in its industry to use GreenShield," notes Linda Milanowski, Director of Materials at Herman Miller. "Its story resonates with our Design for the Environment goals and reinforces our commitment to providing our customers with innovative, sustainable solutions."

Quilty with GreenShield uses up to five times less fluorochemicals than regular finishes and it is MBDC Silver certified. GreenShield also is certified by Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) as an Indoor Advantage Gold product and it is the first finish to be certified by SCS as a Low Fluorocarbon Treatment.

Susan Lyons, Creative Consultant for Materials at Herman Miller, defines Quilty with GreenShield as "green chemistry in action." She adds: "It demonstrates the opportunities that exist in nature to influence problem solving design."

Quilty is antimony-free and uses fully optimized dyes and chemicals free of chlorine and other persistent bioaccumulative toxins (PBTs). It is a Herman Miller Grade 4 fabric, available in a vibrant range of colors and tinted neutrals, and will be orderable in the fall 2008.
