Herman Miller Introduces the Upholstered Mirra Chair
March 22, 2004   [E-mail Page]  [Print Page]

Herman Miller's popular Mirra office seating now comes in an upholstered-back version. The new option creates a fresh look and feel without changing the chair's award-winning look and performance. The upholstered Mirra both complements and contrasts nicely with its original non-upholstered version.

The upholstered fabric, called Latitude, covers the front of the backrest. Its stretchy, spacer-knit technology provides a cushion-like feeling without foam.

Latitude comes in 17 colors, so it's possible to create more than 5,000 different Mirra color combinations. The upholstered option can be added to previously purchased Mirra chairs at a nominal charge.

HERMAN MILLER'S AWARDING-WINNING MIRRA CHAIR ADDS A
NEW, UPHOLSTERED STYLE

Popular Office Seating Offers Fresh, Fun New Aesthetic with
17-color Palette

Herman Miller, Inc., a global leader in office furnishings, workplace consulting, and related services, today introduces an upholstered-back option to its popular Mirra office seating that presents an intriguing new visual and tactile experience without changing the chair's fundamental, award-winning qualities.

Mirra's new upholstery fabric, called Latitude, creates a fresh look that both nicely contrasts with as well as complements the original non-upholstered version of the chair. The fabric is placed on the front of the backrest--the surface that comes in contact with the user's back--with a trim piece around the periphery that finishes off the back's edges elegantly. Latitude's spacer-knit technology provides the fabric with a cushion-like feeling for the user to sink into without the use of foam. The fabric stretches with the user's movements, yet always recovers without losing its shape or elasticity.

"Our vision is to continue to introduce fresh and relevant new application and installation possibilities to Mirra," said Wayne Baxter, senior product manager, Seating. "This is the first extension to the line that allows it to take on different looks for different settings."

Latitude comes in 17 different colors, which now makes it possible to create more than 5,000 different color combinations with Mirra. The addition of the upholstered option with its extensive color palette effectively expands Mirra's application range for customers and designers, making it equally at home in conservative and progressive work environments.

In developing the new upholstered option, Studio 7.5, the Berlin design cooperative responsible for creating Mirra, sought to simultaneously echo and update an aesthetic first made popular by Charles and Ray Eames in chairs they designed for Herman Miller in the 1950s. Mirra's upholstered back is similar aesthetically to the upholstered version of Eames fiberglass shell chairs, where the interior is upholstered and an edging around the periphery of the chair finishes off the upholstery.

Equally important to its design aspects, Mirra's new upholstered version doesn't change the chair's performance standards. All of the notable attributes that set Mirra apart, including the flexibility and pliability of the chair's back, still remain. This is because Latitude's performance is specifically engineered for the geometry of Mirra's TriFlex back. The chair's overall performance attributes, as well as its eye-catching silhouette, also are unchanged.

"Our research and focus group work indicated early-on that there was a great deal of interest in both non-upholstered and upholstered versions of Mirra," Baxter explained. "We had always planned to incorporate an upholstered version into the Mirra line, and now that the chair has been on the market for a year, we felt the time was right to introduce the new option."

Finally, in keeping with Herman Miller's strong commitment to environmental sustainability, the Latitude fabric is made from polyester that is 100 percent recyclable at the end of its useful life.

The upholstered Mirra chair will be available for order through Herman Miller dealers beginning in March. The upholstered option also can be added to previously purchased Mirra chairs at a nominal charge.

"Offering upholstery as an option on Mirra really takes the chair's range of flexibility, color, and fun up a notch, yet at a price that still makes it a great value,"Baxter said. "We know our customers and designers are going to enjoy finding ways to introduce the chair in its various forms into their workspaces."

Baxter also stated that five popular standard Mirra molded back colors have been incorporated into Herman Miller's Caper family of chairs, making Caper an ideal match with Mirra as a side or guest chair in office settings.

More information on the Mirra chair, with and without the upholstered option, is available from Herman Miller dealers and online at www.HermanMiller.com.
